The Uncanny X-Men are getting back together for their first show in 15-years in March.
Lead singer Brian Mannix informs Undercover that the band will get together in Adelaide for the Clipsal 500 but they may also do a couple of warm-up gigs in Melbourne just before that.
“The Uncanny X-Men are reforming for the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide on March 19,” Brian says. “I think we’ll probably do some warm-up shows on the 17th and 18th”.
The line-up will feature Mannix on vocals, Chuck Hargraves on guitar, Ron Thiessen on guitar, John Kirk on bass and Max Waugh in drums. “I haven’t seen all of the guys in one room for a long time,” he says. “I normally catch up with them when I am interstate. John lives in Queensland, Ronnie is in Sydney, Chuck’s in Perth. To get them all in the one room, that doesn’t happen very often. I’m looking forward to that. It will be fun”.
There have only been two Uncanny X-Men reformations since the band broke up in the late 80s. “I think we did one in the early 90s and we did one around 1996,” Brian says. “We haven’t done one since. It’s been a while. I don’t know how we’ll go. I don’t know how long it’s been since some of them have picked up a guitar. I know John still plays and I think Ronnie does. Max and Chuck, I don’t know when the last time they picked up their instrument was.”
There may even be some new music coming from the band. “There is talk of us recording again, not that we expect to have a hit record but it would be something fun to do, many some old fans will want to buy it,” Brian says. “The last X-Men record was 1987, I guess. Yeah, 1987, the ‘What You Give Is What You Get’ album. It did quite well. It got no airplay and was 5000 short of platinum. It sold 65,000 units which in them days was regarded as a failure. These days if you sold 65,000 units they’d reckon you were the ants pants. If you sell 20,000 units these days you are doing well. We did pretty well”.
Meanwhile, Brian is bringing back his stage show ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Countdown, It’s A Musical Comedy’ for a limited season at Crown Casino from February 10-19.
