The artist who did Kanye West’s album cover admits it was deliberately concocted to be “banned”.
Before the release of the universally-praised My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West tweeted variants of the album cover, declaring that one was “banned”.
This is the notorious painting of a garish, bare-breasted angel astride a nude Kanye, although he never confirmed exactly who “banned” it.
Now the artist, George Condo, has admitted to the New Yorker that West specifically asked for a version of the album cover that would likely be banned.
Condo said that when West requested a selection of artworks for the album and singles, he ensured one would be controversial enough to cause a ruckus.
Kanye West manufacturing controversy? We’re shocked and appalled, sir.
