The spin in the music world may be that the physical CD is dead but that certainly is not true in Australia. Less than 10% of the Top 20 albums sold last week were downloads.
In total, Australian’s purchased 209118 albums from the Top 20 titles. Only 13792 of those albums were purchased via downloads.
Pink ‘Greatest Hits … So Far’ sold less than 3% as a download. Of the 34,137 units sold last week, only 950 were digital. Ronan Keating had close to 100% physical sales. Ronan ‘Duet’ sold 4 digital copies out of 10985 total sales.
You would expect Susan Boyle fans to buy the CD. They did with 159 downloads from 22,479 sales. Bon Jovi ‘Greatest Hits’ likewise was also very small digital sales – 790 downloads to 19,834 total sales.
Even Guy Sebastian fans went for “the trophy”. Of the 9064 fans who bought his greatest hits ‘Twenty Ten’ only 283 of those were via download.
It is obviously good news for record stores. The physical disc for the album is alive and well but the single in a physical form is over. Of the 329,058 singles sold in Australia last week, only 123 of them were CD singles and then they were all Short Stack ‘Planets’.
Top sales in Australia last week were:
Album – Pink: Greatest Hits … So Far (34137)
Single – Bruno Mars: Grenade (24,151)
DVD – Powderfinger: Sunsets Farewell Tour (10,851)
