Armed with a jaunty dub-flavoured single, Melbourne retro rockers The Basics are back.
The essential drums/ guitar/ bass three-piece with swooning triple vocal harmonies, impeccable pop songwriting and sharp fitted suits: they're the basics. It's also a fine description of Melbourne trio The Basics. Mixing dreamy pop and the '60s rhythm and blues of The Beatles and The Stones, The Basics wear their hearts on their sleeves. The band features Tim Heath on guitar, Kris Schroeder on bass and Wally de Backer on drums. De Backer has been attracting much national attention for the 2006 album 'Like Drawing Blood' from his bittersweet electro side project pseudonym Gotye.
But the 'Stand Out/Fit In' album of 2006, the urbane songsmiths return with their slick new single 'Looking Over My Shoulder'. More reggae-inflected than their previous work, but still packed with shiny pop hooks, the single will kick off launches and a Tamworth residency.
After their heralded Homebake performance, you can catch The Basics at the World Bar in Sydney on January 19, all through the Tamworth Music Festival, Ric's Bar in Brisbane on January 28, Melbourne's East Brunswick Club on February 8 and at the Kustom Kulture weekend on Adelaide on March 16.
