Tom Waits will release his first book of poems in collaboration with a photographer.
The book will be called Hard Ground, with Waits’ poems being contrasted with stark images of the homeless by photographer Michael O’Brien.
O’Brien is an acclaimed and prize-winning photojournalist with 30 years experience, who has often returned to the subject of homelessness in his work.
It’s the first time Waits has published poems and the first time he’s collaborated with O’Brien, even though O’Brien has taken many photos of Waits, including the cover shot for his Glitter And Doom Live album.
Spinner quoted the publisher, University Of Texas: “[O'Brien will] create a portrait of homelessness that impels us to look into the eyes of people who live on the hard ground and recognize our common humanity. For Waits, who has spent decades writing about outsiders, this subject is familiar territory.”
Hard Ground will be released in March next year.
