Legendary funkster Sly Stone made a rare appearance with the Family Stone at the House of Blues in Anaheim on the weekend.
The Family Stone had been booked to play the venue alongside Disneyland for a number of weeks and initial advertising for the gig mentioned "Family Stone featuring Sly Stone" but the Sly Stone part was removed a few days ago. When The Family Stone took to the stage at 10.45pm, around 75 minutes late, the line-up included original trumpeter Cynthia Robinson, Sly's sister Vet Stone and one of Sly's nieces.
Midway through the show, Vet announced "Please yell 'welcome back'" and Sly came on stage.
Sly Stone performed 'Thank You, Fa Lettin' for the crowd, while the earlier setlist included their classics 'Everyday People', 'Dance To The Music' and 'Stand'.
Sly & The Family Stone officially broke up in 1975. Sly has been a recluse pretty much since 1993, but appeared in public in January 2006 to watch a performance by his sister Vet at LA's Knitting Factory.
He was also honored at the 2006 Grammy Awards with an all-star tribute featuring members of Maroon 5, Black Eyed Peas, Aerosmith and Joss Stone, Robert Randolph and Devin Lima.
