George Harrison's handwritten lyric sheet to 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' is set to fetch up to $US800,000 when it is auctioned in the United States on Monday.
Of particular interest are the words "the band leader said he ain't playin' no more", scrawled at the bottom of the document. They highlight the personal and creative tensions in the Beatles' camp in the lead up to the White album. The original owner of the document believes the words refer to Paul McCartney, not John Lennon.The document features the lyrics originally sung by Harrison on an acoustic version of the tune recorded on 25 July 1968 and released on the recent 'Love' album. They differ slightly to the White album version of the tune. The lyric sheet features the lines;
I look from the wings at the play you are staging
While my guitar gently weeps
As I'm sitting here doing nothing but aging
Still my guitar gently weeps
