During her US showcase tour, a giant donut challenged UK rapper Lady Sovereign to a battle. Seriously.
Pitchfork Media reports that the throwdown happened during her January 8 performance at San Francisco's Mezzanine Club. The challenge stemmed from a website where a San Franciscan fan, Zach Slow, asked for donation to help him get a date with Lady Sovereign. The site was a sensation and he raised $10,000 so she indeed went on the date, although was mostly bemused afterwards. The saga continues as Slow's rapper friend Jelly Donut (who joined the pair on their date) showed up to Lady Sovereign's recent show. In keeping with his artistic vision, he was dressed as a giant donut. After passing out donut flyers to the crowd, he challenged her to a rap battle. Sovereign was reportedly not taking the bait, spitting on J-Dizzle, pouring Red Bull on him and then booting him off-stage.
Donut relates the story on his myspace, concluding, "the beef is on the grill. You spat on the wrong pastry. If you ever get the eggs enough to have that battle, I'm waiting. Otherwise, you never know where the jelly might bubble up..." The world continues to turn.
