Indie stars laud Phil Collins unironically on a Norwegian TV show.
Bizarrely, Phil Collins has become some kind of cause célèbre in the indie scene, where love for soft rock/yacht rock/stadium pop is becoming increasingly sincere.
Phil and some of indie’s most fawned-over stars of today - Sleigh Bells, Yeasayer and Neon Indian - have appeared on an episode of a Norwegian television show called Lydverket.
The episode, dubbed ‘Don’t Fight It, Phil It’, has a mostly-befuddled Collins talking about his unlikely street cred.
He said that Ice-T was a huge fan, and said he often felt like he had to apologise for being popular and successful.
Both Derek E Miller of Sleigh Bells and Anand Wilder of Yeasayer praised Collins and Collins-era Genesis for the simple, catchy hooks.
Collins said, “It’s very flattering that some people making music now, something I did rubbed off on them. I don’t understand, I’m fascinated with it and very flattered.”
He also revealed that he felt his new music career was over, saying he probably won’t make a new record or go on tour again.
His latest release was a cover album Going Back. He said, “You don’t want to be a clown. You want to be a bit more honest – that the you that is on the record is more like the you is really.”
