The Blackfeather Silverchair Connection

By Paul Cashmere

It seems Silverchair has a link with Australia`s classic rock past. Daniel Johns from Silverchair is somehow related to Neale Johns of 70s band Blackfeather.

Undercover caught up with Neal at his performance at The Fleece in South Melbourne last week when he dropped that he was originally from Newcastle, the hometown of Silverchair.

Neale says he is somehow related to Daniel Johns but isn't quite sure how. He says his brother, who still lives in Newcastle, says it may be tracked back to a mutual great-grandfather.

Neale Johns was just 18-years old when he recorded the two big Blackfeather hits 'Seasons of Change' (1971) and 'Boppin' The Blues (1972). Blackfeather only ever recorded one studio album 'At The Mountain of Madness'. The second album, the live record 'Boppin' The Blues', was recently issued for the first time ever on CD through Aztec Music.

Daniel Johns was 13 when he formed Innocent Criminals who later changed their name to Silverchair. He was 15 when they recorded their first single 'Tomorrow'.

Silverchair are currently working on what has the working title 'Album #6'. They debuted two new songs '16' and 'Machina Collecta' at the Groovin the Moo festival this year.
