The long running Community Cup was on again on the weekend with a huge turnout to watch the Espy Rock Dogs play the RRR/PBS Megahertz at Elsternwick Park.
The score was looking pretty dismal at half time when The Living End entertained dismayed Megahertz supporters and grinning Rock Dogs supporters. Their set featured a mix of new and old and in the theme of the day included a couple of Clash covers as well ('London Calling' and 'Tommy Gun').But even with the scores at half time being 0/2/2 to the Megahertz and 3/10/28 to the Rock Dogs, the mighty Hertz managed a staggering comeback with hip hop DJ Stu Farrell kicking a last second goal turning the Rock Dogs five point lead into a one point loss, a loss made even worse knowing that one year earlier they successfully trounced the Megahertz by the same solitary point.
The final score was 5/10/40 (Rockdogs) to 6/5/41 (Megahertz).
There is something remarkable about seeing middle aged musicians square off against sleep deprived radio announcers, but they found common ground in their love of cigarettes and alcohol.
Other performers included Little Freddie and the Pops, The Blackeyed Susans and a revived Nick Barker and the Reptiles, who were the first band to play after the match.
Barker reminisced about the olden days of St. Kilda, telling the crowd of the band's first show in 1987 at the Esplanade Hotel.
The day raised over $160,000 for Reclink and attracted a crowd of over 10,000 people, young and old.
The event will be back next year and will hopefully be bigger and better than ever.
...and remember, as commentator Leapin' Larry L announced at the end of the game, "The real loser here people, is football."
