Handwritten lyrics by John Lennon for The Beatles song `A Day In The Life` have sold at auction in New York for $1.2 million.
Sotheby's auctioned off the piece of paper with the words to the last song featured on The Beatles 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' album on Friday.Lennon wrote edits and corrections on one side of the paper and a version of the song on the other.
John said his friend Tara Browne, 21-year old heir to the Guinness fortune who was killed in a car accident on December 18, 1966, inspired the song.
The Beatles recorded the song at Abbey Road studio in January 19, 1967.
When it was released the BBC banned it because they felt the line "I'd love to turn you on" was a drug reference.
In recent years, both Neil Young and Jeff Beck have played the song in concert.
