David Byrne has addressed the audience at the famed TED talks in California, speaking about the parallels between architecture and music.
Throughout his speech, he discusses the parallels of Bach, Mozart, tribal African music, country music and his own point of expertise post punk to the venues in which they were performed in.Choral music is suited to a large gothic cathedral because it rarely changes key and has long notes, while punk music could be performed in small clubs because the lack of reverberation allowed the percussive nature of the music to come through.
He even notes that birds adjust their tweeting depending on their venue. Birds living high up in trees have a different note to those that live near the ground.
Rather than listen to me waffle on about it, watch the video at the bottom of this page.
The talks, which stand for Technology, Entertainment and Design, bring together great thinkers across various fields and include speeches, interviews and performances (either given for TED or retro-fitted in the case of not-to-be-missed ideas) by They Might Be Giants, Stephen Hawking, Douglas Adams, Richard Feynmann, Imogen Heap, Herbie Hancock, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, Richard Dawkins and a mind-bogglingly large number of other experts across a mind-bogglingly large number of fields.
