Tom Tom Club will turn 30 in 2011.
Tom Tom Club was originally the side-project for husband and wife Talking Heads drum and bass section Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth.
They will headline a show at the Irving Plaza in New York City on January 12th, 2011.
“At that time, our manager was looking for the right place for us to play, somewhere in size between CBGBs and the Beacon Theater,” Chris explains. “He took us to see Irving Plaza and we agreed that it was perfect. It had been an Eastern European social hall and included all the right ingredients for some great shows. So, our manager promoted the show himself and it was a huge success. The next band to play there were our friends The B52s. It became THE place to play when you had graduated from CBGBs. It will be a blast to return there with Tom Tom Club.”
As Tom Tom Club, Chris and Tina had global hits in the early 1980’s with ‘Genius of Love’ and ‘Wordy Rappinghood’. ‘Genius Of Love’ was sampled by Mariah Carey in her hit song ‘Fantasy’.
In 2010, Tom Tom Club released the live album ‘Genius of Live’. You might also want to check out their Christmas single ‘Mistletunes’ from 2008.
The last Talking Heads album was ‘Naked’ from 1988. The only Talking Heads reunion since then was for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Talking Heads performed three songs at their induction, ‘Life During Wartime’, ‘Psycho Killer’ and ‘Burning Down The House’.
Chris and Tina have often said they would like to get Talking Heads back together but that singer David Byrne is the one who won’t do it.
