Bono`s recent surgery appears to be more serious than first reported. U2 have now had to cancel their headline slot at Glastonbury.
'I'm heartbroken,” Bono said in a statement. “We really wanted to be there to do something really special - we even wrote a song especially for the Festival”.The singer called Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis to personally break the news. 'It was obvious from our telephone conversation that U2 are hugely disappointed,” Eavis said. “Clearly, they were looking forward to playing the Pyramid Stage as much as we were looking forward to watching them. At this point, we have no comment to make about possible replacements for U2's Friday night slot. Instead, we would simply like to send Bono our very best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.”
The Edge told fans at u2.com that Bono will be out of action for at least eight weeks. He said that Bono was paralyized in his lower leg and was unable to walk when he called in the doctor who put him immediately into hospital for an operation. Had he not acted early, it could have been permanent.
According to Dr. Muller Woflfahrt, Bono suffered a “severe compression of the sciatic nerve”.
The Edge says the band has lots of new songs and is planning on previewing some of those songs live when they get back on the road.
U2 hope to be back on the road on August 6 and recommence the tour in Turin, Italy.
