David Byrne is suing Florida Governor Charlie Crist, claiming that he used Talking Heads track ‘Road To Nowhere’ without permission in a campaign ad.
Byrne is seeking $1 million ($AU1,227,351) in damages after the Democrat senator used the song in an ad attacking his Republican opponent.In an interview with Billboard, Byrne said he was “pretty upset” about the ad.
“In my opinion the damage had already been done by it being out there,” he said in the interview. “People that I knew had seen [the ad], so it had gotten around.”
“It is not about politics, it’s about copyright and about the fact that it does imply that I would have licensed it and endorsed him and whatever he stands for.”
Despite the fact that the song is credited to all members of Talking Heads, Byrne is the only person involved in the suit.
The track first appeared on Talking Heads’ 1985 album ‘Little Creatures’ and was one of the band’s most successful singles.
