J Mascis debuted his new band Sweet Apple at SXSW this year. Now get ready for a record.
The debut album ‘Love and Desperation’ will be released in a few weeks.The band features Mascis of Dinosaur Jr fame, Tim Parnin and John Petkovic from Cobra Verde and Dave Sweetapple from Mascis’ other band Witch.
The band came together in an interesting way. Petkovic’s mother had just died and in a daze John went for a drive and ended up 400 miles from him. By coincidence, Sweetapple called him and discovered he was not far away from his house and invited him over. Dave also called Mascis and got him over. They started to write a bunch of songs and within three weeks started jamming with Parnin.
"I tell people that I saved John’s life by starting this band," says Mascis. "But they don’t believe me."
Sweet Apple recorded ‘Love and Desperation’ in Cleveland and Massachusetts. It was mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr/Sonic Youth) and Don Depew (Guided By Voices/Cobra Verde).
