Cat Stevens, now known as Yusuf Islam, is heading to Australia for the first time in 36 years.
The Cat Stevens / Yusuf ‘I Guess I’ll Take My Time’ tour kicks off in Perth in June.Cat Stevens was one the biggest singer / songwriters in the world the 70s, enjoying the same level as success as Elton John and James Taylor, when he suddenly stopped what he was doing in 1978 and adopted a new religion.
For nearly 30 years, Cat Stevens, the rock star, ceased to exist.
In 2001, he performed his classic ‘Peace Train’ for victims of 9-11 and then re-recorded the song in 2003 for a charity record.
In 2006, Cat Stevens as Yusuf released ‘An Other Cup’, his first contemporary album since 1978’s ‘Back To Earth’ and last year released the equally stunning ‘Roadsinger’.
He had his first hit in 1967 with the pop ditty ‘Matthew and Son’ but it was 1970’s ‘Mona Bone Jakon’ and the song ‘Lady D’Arbanville’, written about his former girlfriend, model and actress Patti D’Arbanville, that set up his sound for the 70’s.
In 1970 he released a second album, the now classic ‘Tea For The Tillerman’ and followed that up within a year with the equal amazing ‘Teaser and the Firecat’.
Those two albums generated the songs ‘Father and Son’, Wild World’, ‘Where Do The Children Play’, ‘Peace Train’, ‘Morning Has Broken’ and ‘Moonshadow’.
