Former Death Row Records boss Marion "Suge" Knight has lost control over the company after Judge Ellen Carroll ordered a bankruptcy trustee to take over.
"It seems apparent there has been no one at the helm" she said, adding that there had been "gross mismanagement" of the company after Knight admitted he hadn't reviewed the company's financial papers in a decade. The ruling comes as part of a bankruptcy claim filed by the label in April this year (06) after Knight was successfully sued by Michael Harris and ex wife Lydia Harris who invested $1.5million in the label to start it up. They were awarded $107million after they claimed to own 50% of the label.
Knight's lawyer Daniel McCarthy said Knight was trying to swing the company around, after last year renaming it Tha Row. He is currently trying to negotiate a distribution deal for the company and it's lucrative back catalogue that includes some of hip hop's all time biggest stars.
Knight has been accused of violent methods of doing business, with Vanilla Ice once claiming Suge held him out of a window by his ankles until he agreed to sign over royalties. Ice later retracted this comment.
He was not present for the court hearing last week.
