`Why`d Ya Do It` is possibly the angriest song ever made and Marianne Faithfull says she still gets people coming up to her to discuss it.
“I get women coming up to me who were in the middle of divorce and all that shit and they would say they loved it,” she tells Undercover.com.au.The song even had a celebrity fan. “I was at a party years ago and Patti and Eric (Clapton) were there and Eric was furious with me because Patti kept playing ‘Broken English’ all the time and especially ‘Why Did Ya Do It’. It’s not that funny, but its a little bit funny,” she says.
‘Why’d Ya Do It’ is now an essential part of the Marianne Faithfull set. “I really enjoy it because it is a high drama, high energy song. I love it. I was very angry when I wrote that song. It’s a real kiss-off song, isn’t it,” she tells Undercover.
Marianne Faithfull is heading to Australia for shows starting in Brisbane on January 30.
She loves Australia and has always had a great time here. “I always seem to be on top form in Australia,” she says. “It will be the last show of this tour. It has a lot of the old hits like ‘Broken English’, ‘Lucy’, Sister Morphine’, ‘As Tears Go By’ and ‘Why’d Ya Do It’. The rest of it is mainly from ‘Easy Come Easy Go’. The songs are so beautiful, you know. We also do ‘Crazy Love’. A lot of the material from ‘Easy Come Easy Go’ is just fantastic and I am bringing in a 7-piece band”.
She says she has to perform the songs that people know. “I couldn’t not do them,” she says. “I could change them around a bit, I suppose but I could not not do ‘Broken English’. To me it really has stood up as a song. It stands by itself as a very good song. And ‘Lucy Jordan’, people just love it. I might change things a little bit and put a few other songs from ‘Broken English’ in”.
