Australian commercial radio airplay completely misread the music industry in 2009.
With the 2009 ARIA end of year chart now published, only one song from the Top 10 singles of 2009 made the Top 10 most played songs on radio. The biggest selling song of the year, according to ARIA was Black Eyed Peas ‘I Gotta Feeling’. It was the 8th most played song on Australian commercial radio during 2009.
Two songs from Radio’s most played Top 10 didn’t even make the Top 100 ARIA chart. Eskimo Joe ‘Foreign Land’ was the 4th most played song of 2009. ‘Second Chance’ by Shinedown was the 10th most played song. Neither made the Top 100.
Eric Hutchinson ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll’ was the 3rd most played song on radio and 54th song of the year on ARIA. Pink ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’ was 6th most played song but 63rd song of the year on ARIA.
The figures demonstrate that commercial radio airplay no longer powers hits.
