The Stooges, Genesis and ABBA are amongst a diverse range of musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
They will be inducted alongside 60s pop stars The Hollies and reggae juggernaut Jimmy Cliff. It is the eighth time The Stooges have been nominated and this time they are surely the most rock and roll rock and roll hall of fame inductee. Their albums ‘The Stooges’ (1969), ‘Fun House’ (1970) and ‘Raw Power’ (1973) are considered to have helped form the foundation for what would become punk rock in the 70s.
The antithesis of The Stooges was ABBA, who after forming in 1972 went on to become one of the biggest selling acts in history with singles like ‘Money Money’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ propelling the Swedes to homes around the world.
Genesis were originally an art-rock group who formed in the late 60s, but after the original singer Peter Gabriel left in 1975 to pursue a successful solo career the group became more pop-orientated with drummer Phil Collins at the helm.
The Hollies were the creators of such iconic tunes as ‘He Ain’t Heavy (He’s My Brother)’, ‘Look Through Any Window’ and ‘Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress’. They were one of the last of the major “British Invasion” bands to chart in the USA.
Jimmy Cliff is a reggae superstar, who’s hits including ‘Sitting In Limbo’, ‘Many Rivers To Cross’ and the powerful ‘The Harder They Come’, which was covered by Keith Richards in 1978.
The artists were chosen by a panel of 500 voters from the Hall of Fame Foundation, and the only criteria is that they are eligible 25 years after their first recording was released.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation CEO Joel Peresman said the artists “represent a great cross-section of artists that define the broad spectrum and history of rock and roll.”
The ceremony will take place in New York City on March 15, 2010.
