Rage Against The Machine may come very close to blocking Simon Cowell`s X-Factor winner from taking the number one spot in England next week.
A campaign to have a non X-Factor Christmas number 1 started by Jon and Tracy Morter via a Facebook group just a few weeks ago now looks a 50/50 bet with last nights X Factor winner Joe McElderry.Members have been purchasing Rage Against the Machines: 'Killing In The Name Of' on mass from midnight Sunday. Since then this has taken off to such an extent that the front page of the CNN American news website on Friday night read: 'is the Nobel Prize bad for Obama?', 'Tiger Woods taking indefinite break from golf', and 'Rage Against the Machine vs. Simon Cowell'.
The group isn't just for fun though, members have been pledging support to the charity Shelter and have so far raised over £12,000! Head over to www.justgiving.com/ratm4xmas to make a donation.
Speaking of pledges, internet radio station total biker FM have decided to play Killing In The Name Of on the hour every hour until Christmas in support of the effort. The campaign has also been supported by Zane Lowe, Phil Jupitus, and many other local radio stations around the country.
Jon Morter said that this was not intended as a personal attack on Simon Cowell, just an effort to enjoy something other than X-Factor this Christmas.
Should this be successful it would be Rage Against the Machine's first UK number 1. The single would need to be purchased between now and Saturday evening to count for this year's face off.
Over 700,000 people have promised to buy the single. Alexandra Burke sold 566,000 last year. Buy the single and then check out the Facebook site, it's worth it just to view some of the art work the members have produced.
