In the U.K., the winner of X-Factor has once again claimed the number one spot for the Christmas period.
Winner Matt Cardle outdid both the 1963 surf guitar classic ‘Surfin’ Bird’ by The Trashmen and John Cage’s ‘4’33’, both of which were promoted by facebook groups to beat the reality TV star after being inspired by the success of last year’s unexpected chart topper, ‘Killing In The Name’ by Rage Against The Machine.
Ironically, Cardle’s winning song ‘When We Collide’ is a retitled version of Biffy Clyro’s single ‘Many Of Horror’ and he managed to outsell the original single by around eleven to one.
Speaking to Undercover last week, drummer Ben Johnston said of the experience “Britain’s a small place. Everybody knows everybody, certainly in something like the music industry. He said it was a great song and [Cardle] should use it.”
“It is an X-Factor version of the song,” he admitted but said “the whole thing is a bit surreal, we think it’s all quite funny.”
