Sonic Youth’s last album ‘The Eternal’ might still be getting spins from adoring fans worldwide, guitarist Lee Ronaldo has confirmed that they are already planning their next record.
“We’re most probably going back into the studio next year,” Ronaldo said in an interview with the BBC.If that’s not enough, the band are also working on an unnamed film with a French director. "We met the director in Paris and we liked what we saw," Ronaldo said.
These short-but-tantalising quotes are enough to cause plenty of guesses as to what the band are up to, but if, like me, you’re still digging ‘The Eternal’, never fear. "We’re still deeply ensconced in our new record, so we’re gonna play a lot of The Eternal. That’s what we’re having the most fun with. We usually try and pick a smattering of stuff from various old records. It could be way old or it could be from the last couple, you never know.”
On top of that, the band have someone going through piles and piles of tapes taking note of everything that is piling up in the Hoboken studio. What will come out of that? Who knows, but gee a Neil Young-style box set would be ace! *wink wink nudge nudge*
