Speck Mellencamp is on a mission. The young son of John Mellencamp has started a Facebook `1,000,000 to join, my dad John Mellencamp to quit smoking’ and at last count he had 142,496 followers.
“I made a deal with my dad that if I get 1,000,000 to join this group he will quit smoking,” Speck says at the site.Speck has been after his father to quit smoking for a long time. “Then I saw how people were using Facebook to raise awareness of HIV and cancer research and I got the idea to use it myself,” he says at johnmellencamp.com.
In four days, the Facebook page had over 100,000 sign-ups. "I didn't think it would actually become this big," says Speck. "People are leaving messages that if we reach a million, they’ll quit, too!”
The end result is that John Mellencamp is taking notice. I think so! He's taking it seriously - and he has actually started cutting back since we went over 100,000,” Speck says.
