Australian director Nash Edgerton, who directed the new Bob Dylan video `Must Be Santa`, describes the shoot as `a party`.
This was the second time Edgerton has made a video for the music legend. He also directed ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothing’ from the previous Bob Dylan album ‘Together Through Life”. “He must have liked that one because he had us back,” Nash tells undercover.com.auWhen he was first approach by Dylan for another video he thought it would be for another track from ‘Together Through Life”. “I didn’t know at that stage that he had done a Christmas album,” Nash says.
He then worked closely with Dylan on the idea, including the action scene at the end of the clip. “It was a very back and forth collaboration,” he says. “He wanted something fun and exciting and we talked about different action scenes to put in there”.
This video was really something different for Dylan. He had a small cameo on the television in the hotel for ‘Beyond Here Lies Nothing’ but for ‘Must Be Santa’ Bob stars in his first video appearance in more than 10 years. “Yeah, it's the first time he has appeared in one of his own videos for a long time. There was a little bit of pressure,” Nash says.
‘Must Be Santa’ was shot in downtown LA and Bob got right into party mode. “He would hang about and he started jamming in the street a bit. That was a bit of fun,” Nash says.
The clip also features a cameo from Nash’s dad Michael. “I always try and put someone I know in, like friends and my dad Michael is in the Bob Dylan video. He sings “Santa’s got a big red cherry nose”.”
There are a few other notable Australians in the clip. “Glendyn Ivin, who directed The Last Ride, Spencer Susser who did the Evermore video ‘Never Let Me Go’ and is part of Blue- Tongue, Luke Doolan who cuts a lot of my stuff, I try and put him in as well. It was a party, he said.
‘Must be Santa’ is from Dylan’s first Christmas album ‘Christmas In The Heart’. All proceeds from the album will go towards feeding the homeless on Christmas Day.
