Edward Woodward, one of the UK’s greatest actors, has died at the age of 79.
Woodward starred in the cult classic ‘The Wicker Man’ and the television shows ‘The Equalizer’ and ‘Callan’.Woodward played Police Sgt Neil Howie ‘The Wicker Man’. The movie was about the disappearance of a girl on a remote island. He discovers the island and finds a cult who worships a giant wicker man.
Diane Cilento and Christopher Lee also starred in the movie that later lent its name to an Iron Maiden album.
Edward Woodward also starred in the Australian movie ‘Breaker Morant’.
Woodward had been ill for the last few months. In 1996 he underwent triple bypass surgery and in 2003 was treated for prostate cancer.
He died at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro surrounded by his family.
Edward Woodward is survived by his wife, actress Michele Dotrice and four children.
