The music business has had a turn-around this year fuelled by increased sales for digital and vinyl releases.
According to new data released by Nielsen SoundScan, unit sales in the United States for music so far this year will exceed 1 billion sales next week. At the same time last year, 998.3 million units had been sold. The total sales for digital albums in 2008 were 65 million. This week, sales are at 63.9 million meaning last year’s figure will be broken in the next two weeks.
It also appears music fans have dusted off the old turntables. Vinyl sales are already over 2 million so far this year, up 25% on sales for the same period last year and already ahead of the 2008 year-to-date total of 1.5 million.
The biggest selling artist for digital sales this year is Michael Jackson. He has sold 11.3 million tracks.
Second is Lady Gaga with 11.1 million tracks sold, then Black Eyed Peas with 10.3 million sales and Taylor Swift with 9.98 million sales.
