On Halloween, Phish choose a classic album to cover live if they have a gig. This year, they covered The Rolling Stones `Exile On Main Street`.
The show in Indio, California featured a special guest appearance from Sharon Jones and three horn players from the Dap Kings featured on ‘Sweet Black Angel’.What is interesting in this choice of Stones albums is that The Rolling Stones themselves have never performed four of the songs live. ‘Soul Survivor’, ‘Turd On The Run’, ‘Casino Boogie’ and ‘Let It Loose’ have never been played at a Stones gig.
Phish picked ‘Exile On Main Street’ from a shortlist featuring Radiohead’s ‘Kid A’, Prince ‘Purple Rain’, David Bowie ‘Hunky Dory’, King Crimson’s ‘Lark Tongues In Aspic’, Genesis ‘Lamb Lies Down On Broadway’, Jimi Hendrix ‘Electric Ladyland’ and MGMT’s ‘Oracular Spectacular’.
Phish started performing what they call their “Halloween costumes” in 1994 with The Beatles ‘The Beatles’ (White Album). They only do the shows when they have a gig scheduled for Halloween night.
In other years they have done:
1995: The Who ‘Quadrophenia’
1996: Talking Heads ‘Remain In Light’
1998: Velvet Underground ‘Loaded’
1998: Pink Floyd ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’
