Phil Judd, a founding member of Split Enz and The Swingers, has been charged with stalking children.
The court heard how Judd, who lives in the Melbourne suburb of Eltham, waited for the girls outside of their school and would follow them and take photos. The now 57-year old musician “met” the girls by pretending to be a 17-year old boy on Facebook.
He later told them “I was a popstar once”.
Judd admitted to the Herald Sun that he was a “silly old man ... getting on Facebook one night after too many drinks”.
The case was heard in Heidelberg Magistrates Court in March this year. Judd received a $2500 fine and a 12-months suspended sentence.
Judd formed Split Enz in 1972 with Tim Finn. At the start of the band he was very much the creative force. Phil left the band in 1977 and was replace with Tim’s younger brother Neil Finn.
He then formed the short-lived The Suburban Reptiles and then The Swingers. The Swingers had a massive hit with ‘Counting The Beat’, known today to a whole new generation as the Target jingle.
Judd played on Tim Finn’s solo album ‘Big Canoe’ but was not invited to get back with Split Enz for their 2006 reunion.
