Legend of Brazillian music Sergio Mendes has arrived in Australia playing tracks off his new album 'Timeless', recorded in collaboration with Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas.
The first show of the tour was last night in Melbourne's magnificent Hamer Hall, where the packed crowd was miraculously in and seated by the early start. For an hour and a half, Sergio spanned his forty year career and showcased all aspects of Brazilian music. "This part of the show is designed to show you all the different kinds of percussion we have in Brazil" he said as the four-member percussion section had their chance to shine.
A large part of the show was Mendes in traditional mode, playing the Bossa Nova he had become famous for in the 60s when he played with Brazil '66, however he did have a rapper that at times was a little difficult to take seriously. He covered the parts modernized on 'Timeless'.
