Brazilian music legend Sergio Mendes is coming back to Australia for the first time in 21 years.
Mendes was the biggest selling Brazilian artist of the 60s. He made his name with Brasil '66, a bossa nova meets pop band.Brasil '66 signed with A&M Records right at the start when the label was founded by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.
Mendes had alternate hits with songs such as 'Fool On The Hill' (Beatles), 'Scarborough Fair' (Simon & Garfunkel) and 'Dock Of The Bay' (Otis Redding).
Jump forward to now and it was last year when he was approached Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am. The result was the collaboration 'Timeless'. "It turned into a wonderful marriage of rhythms, because it's all African rhythms and haunting melodies" Sergio says. "It's all about the same beats that we inherited from Africa. It's that same common denominator that brought Samba to Brazil and brought jazz to America. We had a ball."
Sergio Mendes will play:
November 14, Melbourne, Hamer Hall
November 17, Sydney, Opera House
November 18, Brisbane, Lyric Theatre
Tickets go on sale on September 30.
