Stephen Gately of Boyzone has died suddenly in Majorca at the age of 33.
Boyzone manager Louis Walsh announced the news saying, “We're all absolutely devastated. I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don't know much about what's happened yet”.Gately was holidaying in Majorca and early reports say he went to bed last night and just did not wake up. No other information is known at this early stage.
The other members of Boyzone, Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham, are all flying to Majorca tomorrow.
Gately was the openly gay member of Boyzone who came out 10 years ago. In March 2006 he wed his husband Andrew Cowles in a civil ceremony. Andrew was with him in Majorca.
Gately was a founding member of Boyzone and was with the band from 1993 to 2000 and then again for the reunion in 2007 until now.
Boyzone have had six number one hits in the UK and four number one albums.
