Saturday at around 11:35am London time marked exactly 40 years to the hour when Beatles had their photo taken crossing the zebra crossing on Abbey Road.
Yesterday, thousands of fans turned up at the crossing out front of EMI’s Abbey Road studios to do the same.Traffic on Abbey Road came to a halt as fans replicated the cross that became the cover photo for the final Beatles album ‘Abbey Road’.
The crossing has become a tourist magnet for decades and being a real crossing, traffic has to stop to let you cross.
That can take time. Hundreds cross the crossing daily and halt traffic while friends take their photo.
Fans also sign the wall outside the studios to also mark their visit. Westminster Council has to repaint the wall every six to eight weeks.
The Abbey Road street sign is also a popular item to steal. To stop theft, the street sign has had to be raised higher than other street signs in London to stop people stealing it.
