M-Lab returned to the Mercury Lounge in New York last night (July 25, 2009) to preview news songs from their upcoming album `A Bold and Hopeful Spark`.
The new album will be the band’s third release and second full album.M-Lab is the three original members including lead vocalist Drew Brody, Derek Gregor on keys and Mike White on drums as well as Nate Stevens who returned to play bass as well as guitarists Steve Dawson and Rob Richie.
The evening surprise was a former regular, jazz violinist Skye Steele, who joined for the last two songs.
M-Lab opened the show with ‘Shot In The Dark’. The song contain the album title ‘A Bold and Hopeful Spark’ in the lyrics. They ended with what has become their signature tune ‘To Be There’.
M-Lab is an interesting band to listen to. They recall the big, theatrical production of Jim Steinman by fusing progressive rock and piano. Think a young Neil Diamond produced by Jim Steinman.
