Sir Paul McCartney returned to the Ed Sullivan Theatre today as David Letterman`s special guest.
McCartney was last at the Ed Sullivan Theatre more than 40 years ago when The Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show. “Just the memory of being here was great. It was kind of scary the first told,” he told Letterman. At the end of the show he performed on the roof of the theatre in the centre of Manhattan and continued playing for the gathered crowd after the show at ended.
Letterman dedicated the entire show to McCartney. Sir Paul talked about The Beatles who he describes as “four guys on a very long spring break”, he said he was closest to George and he talked about Michael Jackson.
Jackson and McCartney recorded two songs together. ‘The Girl Is Mine’ featured on Michael’s ‘Thriller’ album and ‘Say Say Say’ was on Paul’s ‘Pipes of Peace’.
McCartney told Letterman that they were friends but it “actually kind of fell apart later”.
