Cher has launched proceedings against Universal Music Group claiming the company owes her five million bucks in unpaid royalties.
The lawsuit also claims that Universal hasn’t kept adequate records and the exact figure of how much is owed isn’t exactly known. While Cher was never signed directly to Universal, she was signed to MCA with her husband Sonny Bono and Universal has since acquired the label and recently released an compilation album of Sonny and Cher hits.
If she is successful in her suit, the couple’s daughter Chastity will also stand to win some of the settlement.
However, according to an article in the Orlando Sentinel, UMG spokesman Peter LoFrumento says the lawsuit is “without merit,” and the company expects to win in court.
