When Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Show, Bette Midler sang him out. When Jay Leno left his show of 17-years on Friday it was James Taylor who sang the swansong.
Leno and Taylor are both Massachusetts born. Leno asked his good friend Taylor to sing one of his favorite songs ‘Sweet Baby James’ on the show.Jay Leno has passed The Tonight Show torch to Conan O’Brien who will take over the hottest seat in showbiz on Monday.
Leno left, but did not retire. He will begin a new tonight show in the 10pm slot, one hour before Conan, in September.
Effectively both Conan and Jay have each been upgraded by one hour but that is not how the spin goes.
