Johnny Clegg is not only the most famous artist to come out of South Africa, he also had academic writings to his name.
In 1981, Clegg wrote ‘Ukubuyisa Isidumbu’ (Bringing Back The Body). It was an examination of the ideology of vengeance in the MSinga and Mpofana Rural locations between 1822 and 1944.Also that year he wrote ‘The Music of Zulu Immigrant Workers in Johannesburg: A Focus on Concertina and Guitar”.
His final academic work was ‘Toward an Understanding of African Dance: The Zulu Isishameni Style”.
The following year Clegg released his 4th album and the title track became his biggest hit globally ‘Scatterlings of Africa’.
The Johnny Clegg Australian tour starts in Perth this Thursday.
