Turner Stephen Bruton, best known for his work as guitarist for Bonnie Raitt and Kris Kristofferson, has died of throat cancer at the age of 60.
The Austin musician died in Los Angeles on Saturday from complications from his ongoing cancer battle.As recently as last week, Bruton was working on the music for the movie ‘Crazy Heart’. He was the music producer and composer of the soundtrack. The movie stars Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell and Robert Duval.
Bruton was completing the soundtrack with his longtime friend T-Bone Burnett. He completed the soundtrack just days before his death.
He was also working on the new Kris Kristofferson album ‘Starlight and Stone’ in LA.
Stephen Bruton’s credits date back decades. He played guitar for Kristofferson for 17 years and spent that long as guitarist for Bonnie Raitt as well.
His songs have been recorded by Raitt and Kristofferson as well as Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffett, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Martina McBride.
Bruton’s film credits include acting in Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid, Heaven’s Gate and A Star Is Born.
He worked on soundtracks for Miss Congeniality, The Alamo, and Man of the House.
Turner Stephen Bruton will be buried in Fort Worth, Texas. Details will be announced soon.
