Serial offender radio host Howard Stern managed to put Who guitarist Pete Townshend off side before recent interview even started.
The Who's Roger Daltrey and Townshend (as well as Townshend's girlfriend Rachel Fuller) were preparing for an interview with Stern in London last week, and were listening to his broadcast before they were due to appear. Moments before they were linked up, the New York-based host started discussing Townshend's dismissed 2003 child pornography charges. Stern and co-host Robin Quivers suggested on air that they would ask Townshend about the charges, and upon hearing this, Townshend stormed out of the London studio leaving Daltrey and Fuller to complete the interview.Reportedly, Daltrey rose to Townshend's defence during the interview, saying to Stern, "Can you imagine you're accused of this stuff and then you're found not guilty? If you had to defend yourself through this stuff? The wounds are so deep on the man, and it's just tragic because he's got so much to offer."
The perpetually tactless radio host also jokingly called Fuller "Yoko" due to her co-writing a song on The Who's latest album 'Endless Wire'. Stern did end up apologising, and Townshend stated on his webdiary that he is "not angry with Stern or his team."
