I can`t even remember the last great new reggae act. Do we have to go back to UB40? When you think reggae, you think Bob Marley but that was a long, long time ago.
Mishka could very well be the next great reggae act and we have actor Matthew McConaughey to thank for discovering him.“He heard the first album I put out in 1999 on Creation Records,” Mishka tells Undercover News. ‘It came out in England. A friend of his had bought a copy of it and they were on holiday in Jamaica and it was one of the CDs they had for their holiday. He fell in love with the CD and then spent the next few years trying to find me. Eventually he did. I was doing a gig in L.A. and one of his friends went down there and got my number. He called me up and things took off from there”.
In fact, McConaughey was so pumped by the Mishka sound that he started a new record label to release him.
The label is called J.K. Livin’. It means Just Keep Living. Mishka is the one and only artists signed to the label so far.
Mishka is heading to Australia next week and will perform at the East Coast Blues and Roots Festival.
He will also perform at the Northcote Social Club in Melbourne on April 16 and The Vanguard in Sydney on April 17.
