On April 18, Australian’s will have the chance to relive the passion of a good shop in a music store with Record Store Day Australia. Both Kram from Spiderbait and Daryl Braithwaite are looking forward to the day.
“I still like having things on vinyl and I love record stores,” Kram tells Undercover News. “The whole experience of searching is probably more important than getting the stuff. I really dig record stores - I always will.”Daryl Braithwaite’s career goes back to when you were buying Sherbet albums on vinyl and his solo albums on CD. “I had the thrill of being around in The Beatles period, and I remember specifically Sgt Pepper and being able to walk into a store, seeing the big promotion with people queued up - it was great! You connected with the music,” he said. “Then it was a thrill seeing my own stuff in the stores both in my Sherbet days and also with The Edge album. People would look at the cover, then look at me and recognise me - you don’t get this shopping experience online,” Daryl reminisced.
With an industry daily noting doom and gloom, the Australian Music Retailers Association (AMRA) notes that today, still, more than $9 out of every $10 spent on music is spent in a physical store.
Across Australia, retailers will feature live bands in stores, artist signings as well as competitions and giveaways.
Record Store Day Australia is not affiliated with a similar promotion in the USA. The Australian event is all about getting music fans into music stores. The Leading Edge store, JB Hi-Fi, Sanity and many independent retailers will be participating in Record Store Day Australia.
Record Store Day Australia will be held on April 18.
