Paul McCartney will vehemently challenge allegations that he physically abused his estranged wife, Heather Mills.
The divorce proceedings took an shocking turn yesterday, when British tabloid The Daily Mail - citing court papers - alleged Mills had accused McCartney of a number of lurid acts, including: stabbing her in the arm with a broken wine glass; attempting to choke her; continuing to drink and take drugs excessively despite a pre-nuptial promise to abstain; ordering her not to breastfeed their baby, saying "they are my breasts"; making her cancel an operation which interfered with his holiday plans; and objecting "vociferously" to her request for an antique bedpan to save her crawling to the toilet at night.Mills' lawyers have refused to verify the authenticity of the leaked documents - which, under British law, are supposed to be confidential - though they explained that Mills will stand by everything she has said in court.
McCartney's lawyers released a statement which read, "Since the breakdown of his marriage Sir Paul McCartney has maintained his silence in not commenting on the media stories, believing that it was best for all concerned, particularly his children....
"Our client would very much like to respond in public and in detail to the allegations made recently against him by his wife and published in the press but he recognizes, on advice, that the only correct forum for his response to the allegations made against him is in the current divorce proceedings."
A spokesman for Mills explained that she will keep her "dignified silence". So, it's unlikely then that we'll hear any public statement from Mills, ruing the fact that she didn't take the £30 million McCartney supposedly offered her to avoid a drawn-out courtroom saga...
