The Veronicas have done it. The Brisbane act has become the first Australian artists to sell more than 1 million units of a song in the USA in the 21st Century.
‘Untouched’ by The Veronicas has been awarded Platinum in the USA by RIAA this week after passing the benchmark figure this week.According to Nielsen SoundScan, ‘Untouched’ sold 67,000 digital tracks in the last week bringing total sales to 1.01 million.
The song gained acceleration in America when New York radio station Z100 got behind it. It stayed at number one for two months, beating Britney Spears, Lady GaGa and Beyonce.
‘Untouched’ is untouched by any other Aussie artist. The last top 20 single in the USA was Kylie ‘Can’t Get You Out Of My Head’ in 2003, but that was only a hit based on airplay.
At the time, the singles chart was yet to recognise downloads but it did recognise airplay. It was possible at the time to have a hit song without selling any singles, which was the case for Kylie.
