Brits Shock : Coldplay Lose Everything

Thu, 19 Feb 2009 15:22:00 +1100

Coldplay lost every category they were nominated in for this years Brit awards.

Duffy stole the show at last night's BRIT Awards (18.02.09) winning three prizes.

The 'Mercy' singer walked away with Best British Female, Best British Breakthrough and the prestigious Best British Album for debut 'Rockferry'.

Upon collecting her first prize of the evening - for Best British Female - she said: "Thank you so much. It's a real honour to be here. Best British Female I don't know what that means, but I suppose it's a good job my mum didn't have a boy. But, really, this a treat, thank you."

She was presented with her final gong, for Best British Album, by fellow Welsh singer Sir Tom Jones who said to her as he handed over the statuette:

"From one Welsh person to another. God bless."

Holding back the tears, an emotional Duffy replied: "I'm going to keep it together for this one. Thank you so much. For the record, I travelled this whole country from Wales to London playing my songs.

"There are old ladies in clubs saying they heard my songs. It's taken five years but thank you."

The 24-year old songstress - who underwent three costume changes throughout the night - later thrilled the crowd by performing her song 'Warwick Avenue' backed by a full brass and string band.

Other acts to play live at the glitzy ceremony - held at London's Earl's Court - included Coldplay, U2 - who opened the show with their new single 'Get On Your Boots' - Girls Aloud and a duet between The Ting Tings and Estelle.

However, it was Take That who gave the performance of the night with a rendition of their UK chart-topping track 'Greatest Day'.

The foursome - Gary Barlow, Mark Owen, Jason Orange and Howard Donald - appeared from the rafters and descended onto the crowd on a spaceship complete with shooting lasers.

The other big winners of the evening were Kings of Leon who scooped two awards, Best International Group and Best International Album for 'By The Night'.

Praising their UK fans, Caleb said: "We have to give this to England. We wouldn't be a band right now if it wasn't for England, you created Kings of Leon - good job getting rid of us!"

Meanwhile, Katy Perry was named Best International Female, Kanye West Best International Male, Elbow Best British Group and Paul Weller Best British Male.

The show - which was presented by Kylie Minogue and James Corden and Mathew Horne, the stars of British comedy TV show 'Gavin and Stacey' - was closed by the Pet Shop Boys, who were honoured with the Outstanding Contribution To Music accolade.

The pop duo - Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe - thrilled the star-studded audience with a medley of their biggest hits, including 'Suburbia', 'Go West' and 'West End Girls' - on which they were joined by Lady GaGa and The Killers singer Brandon Flowers, who presented them with their prize.
