Australia will soon have the Nokia Comes With Music service following the signing of a licensing agreement with APRA/AMCOS.
Nokia Comes With Music is the first serious rival to iTunes. The deal means Nokia will be able to supply more than 10 million songs to customers with the Comes With Music phone. The service allows you to access the catalogue via your PC or handset and transfer your music between the two devices.
“Our objective is to bring music creators and consumers together,” said Brett Cottle, CEO APRA|AMCOS. “The demand from Australian consumers for new digital music services is growing rapidly. Our aim is to accommodate that demand and translate it into new royalty streams for songwriters and publishers.
“Innovative services like Comes With Music represent the new breed of digital music service where everyone gets a gets a fair return. Unlike illegal P2P services, consumers get affordable quality digital music to keep - while songwriters, artists, music publishers, and labels also get paid,” said Cottle.
Karen Farrugia, Nokia Australia’s Music Manager said, “Illegal downloading not only deprives songwriters and artists of their royalty payments but also takes away consumer certainty in quality downloads. Often, illegal downloads are of poor quality and come with digitally transmitted diseases including computer viruses - Nokia’s service just comes with music.”
“We are delighted that with Comes With Music we can offer a secure, quality and affordable service which gives consumers certainty and superiority in their digital music experience and importantly protects music creators,” she said.
The Comes With Music service will launch in Australia next month.
