Thanks to the phenomenal success of Slumdog Millionaire, contemporary Indian music has stormed the Oscar’s original music section.
The tracks ‘O Saya’ and ‘Jai Ho’ (Music by A.R. Rahman; Lyrics by A.R. Rahman and Maya Arulpragasam) make up two thirds of the “Music (Song)” category, and A.R. Rahman’s score is also nominated in the “Music (Score)” category.Slumdog Millionaire is the story of a young boy from the slums of Mumbai who finds himself on an episode of ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’.
The film itself is not traditionally Bollywood, nor is it a traditionally Western film and is a rare example of the two schools of filmmaking coming together for a truly cross-cultural experience.
Danny Boyle, who was the man behind Trainspotting, The Beach and 28 Days Later, directed the film.
Nominees for Best Song are:
Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman: ‘Down To Earth’ from Wall-E
A.R. Rahman and Gulzar: ‘Jai Ho’ from Slumdog Millionaire
A.R. Rahman and Maya Arulpragasm: ‘O Saya’ from Slumdog Millionaire.
