Neil Young played his first non-Big Day Out show of 2009 last night in Brisbane with a set that delivered something old, something new, something borrowed and a bit of blues.
The parts for the setlist for the Young shows have remained fairly constant for this tour but there is a bit of juggling going on.Of the new songs, ‘Just Singing A Song’, ‘Sea Change’ and ‘When Worlds Collide’ have surfaced during 2008 but are yet-to-be released.
‘Like A Candle’ popped up late last year in the set and surfaced for the Brisbane show. Again, its status is unreleased.
Neil has a new album soon called ‘Fork In The Road’. Some of these songs may surface on that album. It will be the soundtrack to his forthcoming movie Lincvolt. The movie is about “empowering the American dream” and follows the conversion on a classic Lincoln into an eco-friendly hybrid.
Now back to the setlist ...
‘Love and Only Love’ from Ragged Glory has been opening all of the shows so far. Ragged Glory was that turning-point album where Neil was anointed with that “Godfather of Grunge” tag.
The country era gets great coverage, with Harvest, Harvest Moon and Old Way falling into a cluster of their own.
The signatures ‘Hey Hey My My’, ‘ Cortez The Killer’, ‘Cinnamon Girl’, ‘Cowgirl In The Sand’ and ‘Rockin’ In The Free World’ warrant the ticket.
Here is Neil Young’s setlist from last nights show at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
